An Intensive Care Unit (ICU), also known as an Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU), Intensive Treatment Unit or Critical Care Unit (CCU), is a specialized department of a hospital that provides intensive care medicine for critically ill patients.

Intensive Care Units cater to patients with severe and life-threatening illnesses and injuries that require constant monitoring and support from specialist equipment and medications to maintain normal bodily functions.

Specialized Critical Care

Shrinath Hospital's ICU is staffed by highly trained doctors and nurses who specialize in caring for seriously ill patients. ICUs are distinguished from normal hospital wards by a higher staff-to-patient ratio and access to advanced medical resources.

Common conditions treated within the ICU include ARDS, trauma, multiple organ failure and sepsis.

When ICU Care May Be Required

Patients may be transferred directly to an Intensive Care Unit from the Emergency Department when required, or from a hospital ward if their condition rapidly deteriorates.

Patients may also be transferred to the ICU immediately after surgery when the procedure is very invasive and the patient is considered to be at high risk of complications.
